Figurehead

sandals dangling
water lapping at her thighs
her lover, the sea
–
billowing white clouds
salty ocean mists
kiss her face

aloft and adrift
floating ever so gently
just out of my grasp
–
innocence
tethered
by a string

guiding my journey
walking with the ghost of you
on my chosen path
–
dripping boulders
surging white water
streams diverging

nubile and supple
and every move reminds me
of my need for you
–
warm afternoon sun
sodden and hungry
awaiting the spawn

tracing my fingers
across the sinuous curves
of your arching back
–
the crescent moon
your lips turn
towards mine

as dawn approaches
the breath of autumn whispers
in the swirling leaves
–
barefoot at dawn
walking in the surf
I draw you closer

steering through the shoals
drawn in by the siren’s song
of my flannel sheets
–
coveting
the cool side
of her pillow

not quite a woman
and yet no longer a girl
searching for her path
–
fresh snow
treading lightly
in your footprints

lips brushing her neck
the whisper of her shoulder
just touching my cheek
–
caught standing
in your warm
footprints

I can’t remember
dwelling in darkness since I
came into your light
–
barren trees
stand vigil
awaiting sunrise
