Shoah

unspeakable acts-
unlearned lessons of the past
repeating again
–
cattle cars-
disappear within
the gates of hell

the last white rhino-
a moment of extinction
right before our eyes
–
blood in the dirt-
a portrait with
his latest kill

blue moonlight drips through
holes in the tattered shingles
onto the barn floor
–
peeling red paint-
the barn door
hangs askew

flat black soulless eyes
devoid of humanity
staring back at me
–
cold city street-
trying not to see
the homeless

angry bitter tears
burn as they roll down her face
and fall to the dirt
–
arid fields-
dust gathers
around his feet

charcoal black velvet-
an upholstered sky pierced by
pinholes of starlight
–
desert mesa-
the broad expanse
of the midnight sky

nestled in the snow
a single long stemmed red rose
rests on your headstone
–
cold rain-
in the gutter
a bouquet of roses

barnacles gather
just below the waterline
where the piers once stood
–
rotting pilings-
waves, the echoes
of children’s laughter

watching from afar-
a tree falls in the forest
the silence unheard
–
old oak tree-
climbing vines
reach for the su

after the thunder
the sun dances in the snow
through the parting clouds
–
winter morning-
a snowy egret
dips her bill
